PBIM'08 Dissapointments

Perhaps today the world is about getting the numbers, the bottomline, balance your cheque book, economy of mass but I digress here.

You (YES! You the organizers), have gotten it upside down again. To get your numbers you forgot your target audience and treating them right. I am talking about logistics of runtime management. Many unfortunate runners who were not so fast (but this is not the excuse one should give it to them as even the last runner should be treated well) have again found out that refreshing stations ran out of drinking water - again and again, year in and year out!

How dissapointing! Last year I experienced it and this year I was a little fortunate because I was one of the early starters of half-marathoners so this did not serve a problem to me but my plight goes to the runners behind me (their complaints reached me). Their dehydration is a serious matter which the organizers have (blatantly?) overlooked again. It was fortunate that no fatal incidents occurred due to dehydration but don't stretch your luck too long.

Tell me, RACE DIRECTOR, why was it that difficult to supply adequate drinking water for every runner? This is a basic prerequisite that you must provide and you overlooked it again and again, and all you ever trumpeted about is getting the HUGE NUMBERS.

And then there were more, like there were only 4 toilets serving the needs of 16,000 participants, where in the race-guide brochure there were hints of adequate relief portals. I am very unhappy with this blatant disregard for human needs.

Of all races I've been to in major cities around Malaysia, Penang (the island part) has the least desired basic-amenities-for-race, during my entire experience of running. Especially when it comes to the one managed by the usual suspects (revelation from senior runners). If you are participants from abroad or out-of-town, you might want to weigh in the inconvenience factor of stepping into Penang Island for races - until the usual suspects retired from insidious activities

I would have given you the finger, but I believe this could be your first time organizing a PBIM race. I will call for a boycott of future PBIM runs, if you don't get your basics right.

Do Not Neglect Your Supporters, RACE DIRECTOR.

p/s. previous govt., this is not about you doing a good job the last time around

Penang Bridge International Marathon '08

Guys, how ready are you to tackle this year's biggie? It's 25Km and more, it's daunting, it's challenging, and it's exciting. Full of pain for sure and that would put your determination to the sternest of tests. Starts you carbs heavy diet from now till next Sunday. It helps, from my last Malakoff experience - for the first 20Km at least.

Well, if you're just going there for some fun, why not surprise the organizers with our spoof on their original design. Just send it to any T-shirt printers and they can do it for you for less than ten bucks. Hey, we even got Team BDRC emblazoned! :D

Common Running Injuries

Most of us regular runners have one of these nagging injuries:
• Runner's knee
• Achilles tendonitis
• Iliotibial Band Syndrome
• Plantar fasciitis
• Shin splints

For me, I've been having runner's knee for an awful long time. I remember it happened like a premonition for me back in '05, the Friday that I was playing badminton and I was supposed to run a down-terrain leg in the Round-Island relay on Sunday. That Friday, my left knee went weak while I was moving backward. My instinct told me that I should give the run a miss, but I chose to ignore, and fatefully on that Sunday I had my first "runner's knee" while running down Teluk Bahang dam.

If I don't run for sometime, the healing process does take place, but the trouble is I am not stopping for that long, thus the recurrence. If I do not run for more than 30 min each day, the nags will disappear but if I do longer than an hour run, the nagging weakness comes back. Walking upstairs will feel a light acute pain and weakness but managable and that's why I'm still stubbornly running. I should stop!

Share your runner's nags with us.
You can self-diagnose here.

Incursions, Excursions, Kissing Cousins...

In case any of you had missed out any of our recent excursions, well to be exact it's the kind that doesn't venture beyond the confines of that bum-loving bitumen square where the dirt marks encrusted there were circumspect signatures of soiled bums from who knows where it drips from. Drippings aside, pray your nasal senses do not pick up scents other than lavenders, but this is the arena of happennings.

Well, this excursion is of the cullinary delights which our delightful members whip it up somewhere and brought it at every beginning and tailend of the week - since I dunno when. Did you taste Mei's darkchoc-mint cake yesterday? Unbelievable! And gosh! Eddie's souffle butter cake. Man! It was out of this world. LayHooi's brown-sugar jelly with coconut-milk toppings? Wahh...makes me wanna cry like baby for more. Then there's guaguang's clean-up acts from his fridge - if you do not notice the moss on the edges, his nihon tidbits are always a surprise to chew upon - I remember something smelling like late granny's sarong. And our gourmets did all this in excellent manners that could rival that of Victorian charm - minus the impossible rigidity and corsets - the servings come in as pristine condition as it ought to be - warm dark glutinous broth (layhooi, muaccks!) or cold beers that comes really chilled (guaguang - you da man).
Gadbejasus! All this had been sinfully edifying, I am holding my knuckles white waiting for heavenly delirium, mmm whom might it be...

One couldn't help imagining what these ladies and guys did in their kitchens, and err...erstwhile elsewhere! Our lil running club is evolving into a morph between gourmets and esoteric runners and a not too unusual battleground - the girth - the excursions that induce the incursions.

Of kissing cousins? Dude, turn a chapter for group behavioral chronicles.

BDRC Banner and Dinner Updates

We are trying to have the above banner printed (wh: 8x3 feet) for general-purpose usage, and we hope to have it slung somewhere during our coming dinner. At this point of post, we have bookings for up to five(5) tables for our dinner.

FYI: Our planned 8-course dinner, is likely to be changed to buffet style dinner (indoor compared to our earlier poolside). This is due to popular requests from members. Pls let me know asap if you have any other preference.

Anyway, the printer-people suggested to have the image saved in actual measurements and in TIFF format. Actual measurements? My imaging tools don't have that function. Photoshop perhaps, but where's the registration code (Hui, help pls?)

Suggestions for banner?
